Favorite Things Friday: The Right Containers

SONY DSC

I hate to admit it, but these stupid, plastic containers give me a LOT of joy. I love knowing that everything fits in them. I love their compactness. I love having a system I follow every year.

I don’t like that I had to buy them. It seems like we should be able to get along just fine with the system my parents used – wrapping ornaments in toilet tissue and piling them into an old cardboard box. I did that for years, but then one year indulged in “real” containers for my various Christmas accoutrements and I will never go back. Turns out that there really is better living through plastic. I have never been happier unpacking or packing up my Christmas stuff.

Looking for post-Christmas sales on these ornament boxes, wreath boxes, and light spools is a good idea. They really do make the whole holiday decorating effort much easier.

This year, as I am unpacking my Christmas gear, I am paying closer attention to the things that make me happy and the things that I am keeping out of a sense of obligation or plain old ambivalence. I want to pare down and have only the things that make me and my kids really happy. I have already made one trip to the donation center and this group of things went there today.

Fake fruit (very realistic, but still unnecessary), a parasol (why have I kept this?), extra office supplies, plastic champagne flutes, sheets for a bed size I don’t own, fabric and trim bought impulsively, and a faded Easter wreath. The hardest things to give up were the clay Christmas tree hand-made by my daughter (which weighs about 30 lbs.) and the shower curtain which is pretty but doesn’t work in my bathroom anymore. All of these things have sat around my house for a long time and it is time to move them out into the world for someone else to enjoy.

I hope you are enjoying the holiday season and finding ways to make it easier and more joyful.

Are you doing anything differently this year?

National Match-Up Day

SONY DSC

Happy Monday! Today is the day officially designated as “National Match-Up Day” by my friend and fellow blogger, Sara, over at GoGingham.com.

No, this is not the day you have to wear the same clothes as your significant other. Thank gawd.

No, this is not the day you have to get all of the socks into pairs. Thank gawd.

No, this is not the day you have to put all of the right school forms in the right backpacks. Thank gawd.

No, today is much easier!

Today is the day that you make sure all of your food storage containers have matching lids! Yay! I love doing this because it means I get to throw things away. With no regret whatsoever! Less stuff means – well, less stuff! To clean, to keep track of, to wish I could find a lid for!

As you may know, I live in a fairly small house. Less stuff is kind of the holy grail around here. I swear, I will fill up whatever space I have with “stuff.” In New York City, we lived in a two bedroom apartment with three kids. All of our stuff fit in that apartment. Including strollers. And high chairs. Now I can barely fit our stuff in a 3 bedroom house with a garage – and there is one less person living here!!! It is a constant battle between me and the stuff.

My secret weapon in the fight against too much stuff is to make things do double duty. These are my drinking glasses.

SONY DSC

When used with a plastic lid, they become food storage containers. I love this. It just makes me happy. SONY DSC

I try to keep only a few essential food storage containers beyond the drinking glasses. A couple of big squares, a container I could give away in case I need to share soup with someone, and a few portion-sized containers for leftovers. Luckily, our main food staple, leftover pizza, fits nicely in a plastic bag which can be used several times.

This is the place I keep my food storage containers. Yes, it is small.

SONY DSC

Here are the contents of that little nook. Yes, that is a lot of stuff.

SONY DSC

Once I matched up everything, got rid of extras, put other things away where they belong, this is what I ended up with.

SONY DSC

Technically, the salad spinner and blue egg cooker are not food storage containers, but they are plastic, so for some reason it makes sense to me to keep them with the food storage containers.

Everything fit into one wire basket drawer. Making the lids and containers easy to grab keeps things from getting out of control. If you have to dig for something, you are definitely going to make a mess.

SONY DSC

I was able to organize some of my other small appliances (I love small appliances!) in the second wire basket drawer. Winning!

SONY DSC

This extra storage space was a bonus I didn’t expect. (Also, I don’t mean to brag but did you notice the very clever use of the copper water line to the refrigerator as a custom salad spinner holder? Are you jealous?)  You never know what good things will happen on “National Match-Up Day”!

Do you clean out your food storage containers on a regular basis? Did you do it today?

Favorite Things Friday – Road Trips

I have admitted that I am a recovering Rule-A-Holic. Apparently, I also have a problem with Perfectionism Abuse. I didn’t realize it was an issue because my life is so far from perfect that it was not even a realistic long-term goal. (See how smart I am – lowering the bar for myself with this whole “plenty perfect” thing?! I can almost hear you cheering, “aim low, sister!”) It is so lucky that I am surrounded by friends who know me and really hold onto what is important to me. They help me remember myself and act as a road map for me when I forget my direction on this crazy road trip.

The truth is, I don’t really know where or how to pare back from wanting to do and be everything I envision. I am figuring it out as I go. That’s part of what is fun about road trips.

I have a well-organized “To Do” list, many pages long that keeps me on track and helps me prioritize.

SONY DSC

It is never as much as I would like, but I do make as much time as I can for the important things – friends, family, my honey, writing, being still.

My kids might not like the idea of the family road trip I have planned for the next few days, but they usually end up having fun. They don’t realize how fleeting this time together really is. We will get out in nature, see new things, watch movies together, enjoy books on tape, and laugh at the same absurd things. I work hard a lot of the time, but make sure that I get to play tennis and do fun things. I am happy to say that my kids usually do the jobs I leave for them when I am out of the house. (As long as it doesn’t involve folding fitted sheets or stirring.) I know very well that I could be in a worse situation and that life is often shorter than we think.

SONY DSC

Maybe you are reading my blog because you have it all figured out and are enjoying watching me meander my way down this road of learning to be comfortable with plenty perfect. (That’s fine, but you should be commenting more and filling me in on whatever I am missing!) Maybe you are just looking for a place that makes you feel normal and want to ride along. Why-ever (just made that word up!) you read my blog, I just want to say thank you for listening to my ramblings and finding something that about my life that you can relate to. I really appreciate your sharing your own experiences and thoughts.

Today, I am taking the kids away for a few days on a road trip. I am hoping for few good memories and even fewer distractions. I will be less plugged in and won’t be able to respond to your comments until next week, but I will be reading them. I am trying to be okay with that. I guess it is all about enjoying the ride.

Are you in?

Filing In Style

SONY DSC

The most important thing to remember whenever you have to do some kind of drudgery – like filing – is to wear a cute outfit. Seriously, it helps. I tend toward the sparkly for my filing attire. It just feels so much better than doing something I don’t like, while wearing something I don’t like. What’s the sense of that?

That being said, I try to do drudgery – like filing, cleaning the hair out of the drain, and making dinner – as seldom as possible and as quickly as possible. Here are my my lickety-split filing methods…

STEP #1

Gather all of your papers into one pile and set yourself up near a waste-paper bin.  As soon as you start, you are going to touch each paper for as little time as possible.  Make very quick decisions about whether a piece of paper goes in one of three piles:  ACTION, FILE, TRASH/SHRED.  Work really super fast during this first Quick Sort.

SONY DSC

STEP # 2

Coffee (or tea) break.  Yep – government employees do it and you can too!  Take a minute and enjoy a treat to reward yourself for getting through the hardest part of this effort – getting started!

SONY DSC

If you were unable to complete STEP #2, I am sorry, but there are no treats for you.  Go back, set a timer for 15 minutes, and make yourself work fast. I know you can do it.

STEP #3

You will want to deal with the ACTION pile immediately – so you won’t be up at night worrying about missing a deadline or wondering whether you left a child somewhere (or is that just me?).

Whenever I am working with the ACTION pile, I like to keep a TO DO list on hand. (Actually, I keep my TO DO list on hand at all times.) Anytime I can write down a TO DO and toss the paper I was keeping to remind me to DO it, I can taste victory over the piles that threaten to overwhelm me. I keep one TO DO list for everything (work, kids and personal) because it all has to get done eventually and will inevitably be prioritized against each other. I also like knowing everything I have TO DO is in one place. (And it is feels really awesome to see all the crossed off TO DO’s in one place!)

SONY DSC

With your TO DO list at the ready, do another Quick Sort of the ACTION pile into three piles: URGENT – DO IT NOW!, DO IT LATER, and MAYBE DO IT.

SONY DSC

URGENT – DO IT NOW items are things like pay the mortgage if it is overdue, register for camp if the deadline is looming, and buy wrinkle cream.

DO IT LATER items are the dog’s new tags, the magazine you need to return to a doctor’s office, prescriptions that need refilling soon, and health plan information you need to review.  (When you are done with sorting, these items can be filed so that they can easily be found when you are ready to deal with them.)

DO IT MAYBE items are a new recipe you might want to try, vacation ideas for someday, and a 30-day free trial for BJ’s Wholesale Club. (When you are done with sorting, these items can be left in a folder and ignored. If you ever need the information, it will be there in your MAYBE file.)

STEP #4

File whatever is left over from the initial FILE pile and the DO IT LATER pile. Just dig in and get it done, knowing that your job is much more manageable now that you have whittled your pile down to only the most essential papers. Set your timer and work in 15 minute spurts if you have to.

STEP #5

At this point, it is completely appropriate to eat an entire pan of brownies. I am here to tell you that it isn’t that difficult to do. You deserve a really big treat for getting through your pile of papers and making some sense of it all. Luckily, you looked good while you were doing it!

SONY DSC

What do you like to wear while doing drudgery?

Livin’ The Plenty Perfect Life…

It has been a long week, so I want to take a minute and share with you just how plenty perfect my life is lately. It isn’t pretty. My kitchen is downright disgusting. I went to an elementary school event last night looking like a homeless woman, because I forgot about it until the last minute and hadn’t showered all day. I am much busier than I should be, but I absolutely LOVE everything that I am doing, so I don’t want to give anything up. There are big cracks and something is bound to break at some point, but until then, I am happily plowing on with a tired smile on my face.

Writing my blog is so much fun – except when the devil possesses my computer and I feel like crying. This silly blog takes way more time than I should be putting into it, but how many things do you love enough to stay up late to work on? That’s how I know it is the right thing to do.

I love working with men’s clothing. I am not crazy about the necessity of self promotion letting my friends know I am available for all their men’s clothing needs, especially when I go to the trouble to send out personal emails to my friends and, in the process of cutting and pasting some of the basic information I want to share, I start out my note to my friend Lizzie with “Hi Missy.” That just does not convey the message I mean to send.

I love helping clients decorate their homes. I love it so much, I can’t put off a project. I know the feeling of wanting something to be finished, so I dive right in when someone askes for my help. Working on these projects is a treat for me and sometimes I even save it as motivation to get other things done.

I love working on my own home and trying to make it work and look the way I want it to. It does make me feel like a little bit of an imposter when I see mess in my office, but I figure maybe I can post about it and make the most of the drudgery of clearing clutter.

I love my crazy kids and the things I have to tell them like, “no, you are not really an iguana, please stop asking me to pet you” and ”please put pants on.” I love that my daughter, who has been home not feeling well for two days, and I were forced to wait 45 minutes alone in the doctor’s examination room with nothing else to do but chat and make each other laugh.

You can’t plan plenty perfect. You just have to squint and try to see it on the edges of a busy day, a mess up, or the satisfied exhaustion that comes from having so many things you love and want to do.
