Outdoor Art In Stowe, VT

I just happen to really appreciate outdoor art. I get really excited whenever I see an installation out in the everyday landscape. Sometimes, when you first see it, you don’t even know if it is meant to be art or not. Some pieces I like more than others, but in general, it just makes me happy to see art created outside of a museum.  Whatever it is, I am usually pretty happy to look at it.

Top Ten Reasons I Like Outdoor Art

10.  You don’t have to go to a museum to see it.

9.  You don’t have to go to a museum and pay to see it.

8.  You don’t have to drag your kids to a museum and pay to see it while you listen to them complain about seeing it.

7.  It is usually BIG. (Which means I don’t need my glasses to see it.)

6.  It has been created to withstand rain, bird poop, and grimy fingers, so I don’t have to worry about my kids breaking it.

5.  It is often made of metal and I really like metal sculptures.

1.  Outdoor art presumes a certain decency about people – that they are not going to vandalize it, steal it, or wreck it for no good reason. Which makes me feel really good.

Family Get-Away – Stowe, VT

DSC05076

I know that our time is limited. My kids have grown up faster than I ever thought possible. Back when they were babies, a vacation where we could all carry our own suitcases was unfathomable. These days, it is more important to me than ever to spend time together as a family. Even if it is only for a couple of days.

This year, I got more resistance than usual when I suggested a family vacation. My kids have had a busy summer with camps, church group trips, visiting their grandparents, and being away from home more than they would like to be. Unfortunately, I know that unless we actually leave our house, my kids will fill their time with friends and other activities, so this year I had to really push for a few days away together. (This is where being in charge of this Queendom comes in really handy. It is a very benevolent monarchy, I must say.) I made plans for us to visit Stowe, VT and, as I expected, we all had a great time.

We stayed at the Trapp Family Lodge (yes, the von Trapp family from “The Sound of Music” actually moved to Vermont! Who knew?).

From the helpful front desk and front door greeters, to the extensive facilities, this place had everything we needed. Great food, free coffee, outdoor and indoor pool,

an Outdoor Center to rent mountain bikes and get trail maps, tennis courts (my daughter even took a tennis clinic with me), and spa (we enjoyed the sauna!), and most importantly a nearby bakery with coffee and yummy treats. My youngest son and I walked there early morning and were lucky enough to see a big fat hedgehog on the way home!

During the day, we played “Marco Polo” in the pool,

fished,

mountain biked (which turned out to be a great family activity)

hiked and played in waterfalls.

In town, there were very good ice cream options!

We were even lucky enough to see some cows up close and personal.

One night, the very friendly staff even set up a movie just for us on one of the many living rooms. This get-away gave our family a chance to reconnect and have some laughs together. When my kids kept insisting that they wanted to go back to town to see the “Fried Swan Show,” I didn’t know what to think.

When they realized it was just a gallery, they, of course, lost interest. I have to admit, a “Fried Swan Show” did sound really interesting.

My daughter taught us a new card game called “Fluxx” and we couldn’t stop playing every evening, even though we were so tired from our full day of activities. The moon on our last night was spectacular and reminded me of just how lucky we were to be able to share a couple of days together, out in nature, away from our day-to-day lives. I know these are times we will cherish.

Kids In Nature

In her book, “The Shelter of Each Other – Rebuilding Our Families,” Mary Pipher says that, as adults, people remember three kinds of family events with great pleasure – meals, vacations and time spent outdoors with their families.

This is certainly true for us.  Not the meals part - as it is really hard to come up with a meal (other than cake and ice cream) that pleases everyone - but vacations in nature are some of our best memories.  When we are away, the kids tolerate get along with each other and even end up having fun with each other because there are no better alternatives around.  (They also get to bond over complaining about whatever I am making them do.)  When we are in nature, we are not separated by electronic distractions, friends, or the very seductive illusion that we can get everything done and then relax.  We have to just be where we are and make do with what we have.

Trying to relax and accommodate each person’s needs can drive me a little nuts.  Being away together is a more intense, concentrated version of being at home together, so I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise when I find myself frustrated with…

…a need for creative expression,

or an adamant opinion about what is acceptable footwear for 30 degree weather,

or each person’s unique sense of style.

The pink shoelaces are supposed to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness. I sort of think he did it just so he could say “breast.”

Mary Pipher says that being in nature makes us feel small, yet reminds us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.  Being a part of a family definitely makes me feel small when I lose my temper at times, yet part of something bigger.  For all of their moaning and groaning about family adventures, I am helping us make memories with the time we have together, which is a rarer and rarer commodity as the kids get older.

It is a lot of work to make adventures happen and they don’t always turn out the way I had hoped, but I think I might be the only one in the family who realizes it won’t be like this forever, so I keep at it.

What is your favorite family vacation?  I always love to hear what has worked for other people!

The Plenty Perfect Elastic Stirrup Solution

I predict that you are going to hit yourself in the head and say – “I shudda thought of that!” after you read this post.  I think you are going to forward this post to 10 friends and say “why didn’t we think of this?”  (Yes, please do that – I need readers.  Thank you.)  This plenty perfect solution is so simple, so easy, and so “duh” that I almost feel silly posting it.  The reason I am posting it is that I have not seen this tip ANYWHERE…and I suspect that beneath my simple, forgetful, dopey mom exterior, I just might be a genus.  Oops, I mean a genius.

When considering my very small suitcase and my week long trip to California and the wide range of weather conditions we were going to encounter, I realized that I could not bring multiple pairs of jeans.  I had to bring one pair of jeans to do both of the jobs I needed them to do – wear with boots and wear with flats – is that too much to ask?  Normally, you might say “Yes, that is too much for one pair of jeans to do” but I am here to say “NO.”  No!!!!   No, that is not too much to ask of your jeans when you equip them with the Plenty Perfect Elastic Stirrup Solution!

I have tried everything – the hope for the best method, the fold and tuck method, the fold and tuck into a tall sock method, the mitten clip method and nothing works better than this!  Here it is – the answer to your jeans-lovin’ prayers!

Sew a button onto each of the inside seams of your jeans (about 4-5″ from the hem) and in a 8″ strip of 1″ wide elastic cut a slit (or two if you want to adjust).  There you have yourself a handy removeable stirrup!  Of course, you should adjust these measurements to suit your personal legs and jeans so that the whole thing is comfortable.

That’s all you have to do to keep your jeans in your boots – and when you want to wear flats, just take the strap off!

One pair of jeans with two very different functions – yay! - how plenty perfect!

I told you I might be a genus!
